WWE NXT’s Gunther addresses his name change

It caused quite a stir when WWE NXT revealed that the powerful force formerly known as Walter would now be launched as Gunther, and feedback poured in with boatloads. Since the initial announcement, things have settled down a bit, and while there are still regular chants of Walter when he steps out in the ring, the enthusiasm has mostly faded. In a new interview with wrestling inc. Gunther was asked if the name change upset him, and he felt the same reaction would have been if his name had been changed in the opposite direction.

“It’s not all frankly,” Gunther said. “If it had been the other way around, and Gunther had been by Walter now, it would have been the same. A lot of people react negatively to change. Change is normal in life, it’s part of it, and we have to go with it.”

Now Gunther is said to be heading to SmackDown soon, but it doesn’t seem likely that his name will change again, as he is expected to remain the leader of Imperium when he finally makes the leap. If he does, you can expect him to be a part of the Tag Titles scene sooner rather than later, which is good news for SmackDown, as he could use another Tag team in the mix for New Day and The Usos.

Those who’ve watched NXT recently have also seen some transformation regarding Gunther’s body, and when asked about it, he credits his new feeding regimen.

“I think I eat less. I’ve always worked out a lot, but for the first time, I really focused on my nutrition. These guys really pushed me. I have to say, when I was a fan of wrestling, I always liked the look of heavyweight people in Japan who have a little bit of guts. Which bears, only quarrels and things like that. But, at the end of the day, you have to keep up with the times, and evolve a little bit by bit, and that’s what I did,” said Gunther.
